Like most students moving away from home to study, I need to find accommodations during the summer.
I lived in one of the university halls for two years, and residence were asked to leave within 24 hours after their last exam.
I remembered feeling like in limbo during that time, juggling between studying and finding a place to stay over the summer. It was a great relieve when the hall I’ve lived in employed me as their summer staff, providing me free accommodation! (I know, FREE!!) I might write another blog about the things I went through working in the halls. The job wasn’t easy, but worth it for a broke student. I am sitting in my hall bedroom writing this blog now. There is a cool summer breeze out there, but my room was well insulated and warm. (I like being warm.) Looking back these two months, I am really grateful that the Master and manager approved my stay.
That’s the prologue. Now let me tell you why I have to move rooms every month XD
My room during the school year was on the second floor. During the summer, the hall housekeepers have to do spring cleaning. In order to get me out of their way (Uh-Hm, politely asked me to stay somewhere more convenient), I have to move into a guest room on the ground floor. So that’s the first one.
The guest room was very nice. It’s an ensuite with an overhead heat pump. Sitting in the middle of the room was a soft queen bed, with a classic wooden dressing table and marble desk on either side of the bed. I was able to stay there from November and December, and that was great.
I have just finished my second move, which is just into the bedroom two doors down the corridor. Apparently the hall is going to have a VIP guest staying in the ensuite after New Years, so I have to migrate again. Why didn’t I just move into this bedroom from the start you might ask. Well the hall was like a B&B place over the summer, and these rooms were rented out.
I just have to stay here for another three days now, because I’m about to move into the final destination! My new apartment!
Four of my hall mates and I decided that we’re ready to try a new style of living in Dunedin. And voila, we’re flatting in 2024! I got the keys on the first day of this year and paid our new home a visit. It is really cool! I’m looking forward to moving into it soon. Hopefully this will be my third and FINAL house move.
I had to pack my stuff for every move, so I tried to keep things in their containers and not unboxing too much between each move. It hits me that there were many things I hadn’t touched during these two months. I do use them once in a while for fun, and some were stock for consumables which I hadn’t finish yet. Perhaps this highlights a theory – we don’t need much stuff to live. I am grateful to how fortunate I am, with mum sending me packages from home, and also being able to work to earn money and buy things. But I would keep in mind to only get stuff that I truly need and save up for bigger purposes. I don’t have a clear goal to what I want to achieve yet, but when the opportunity comes, I want to be prepared to grasp it. Financial stability is a big one, and I don’t want it to hold me back! Moreover, it would be nice to try the minimalistic lifestyle. Not only I have less stuff to pack for my next adventure, but also enhances my creativity to have fun with stuff I already have.
And for now, I can’t wait into my flat!
